Maha Satipatthana Sutta Part3A : Mental objects Contemplations

Maha Satipatthana has become a very essential meditation teaching guide for me, especially after I realised that the four contemplations taught in this Sutta forms the backbone of the 7th of the Noble Eightfold Path. Since the Noble Eightfold Path is the common path for all Buddhists regardless of "vehicles" or Schools, it is very clear to me that the Buddha intended these contemplations to be practised by all Buddhists. In other words, this is not a "Theravada" meditation. I found out it is an essential skill for any meditator embarking on the path to Nibbana. No matter what other meditation methods he/she may be using, the latter can always apply the principles taught herein to counteract any "objects" arising through his/her six senses. Moreover, it can be used to check whether we are still having the same amount of defilements or not. Are we decreasing them, or preventing them from arising? We can check by using Satipatthana methods.

Maha Satipatthana Sutta Part 2: Feelings and Mind Contemplations

Today I bring you the next part of the Maha Satipatthana Sutta. I combined the sections on feelings and mind as each of these are short sections within the Scripture. The final section on Mental-objects contemplations is longer and I may have to split into 2 or even 3 chapters. Obviously the Buddha intended the first 3 contemplations as preparatory for the final mental-objects contemplations. The Buddha even elaborated on what are the obstacles during these contemplations and how to overcome them. He also touched on the factors of enlightenment. The importance of this 4 contemplations cannot be over-emphasised enough, as the Buddha repeated these 4 and applied them even in the Anapanasati Sutta. In the latter sutta, he elaborated on the breathing meditation which he touched briefly in the Maha Satipatthana Sutta.

Maha Satipatthana Sutta Part 1 : Body Contemplations

Based on my study of the Maha Satipatthana Sutta, I made some notes. From the notes, I made some slides to keep a summary of what I have learned. Note: I have not yet included audio into the video. Perhaps in future. I hope you will find it useful. In viewing the video, please click "full screen" and also be ready to click "pause" button. I think I set the timing too fast. Sorry for any inconvenience. As this is my first video, my inexperience really shows. Any suggestions to improve is appreciated.

If you like these, wait for part 2. In the meantime, you may explore this post -  https://buddha-and-me.blogspot.com/2011/12/avoid-evil-do-good-and-purify-mind.html

I am glad to start the beginning of the year with completing this task. I will start another book today. Anyone who wished to have their names written at the back of the Sutra may write in the comment. For donation amount, it is up to you. I will provide you with details to your email.

So far I have finished with 2 sets, and three more to go. The first one shows the last one and the half pages yet to be completed.

#SanghataSutra #Sutrawriting #MahaBoowa

Update 6 Jan 2022.
In the last 2 days I have discovered teachings by Ajahn Maha Boowa on his meditation practices. I also found an old book I had on Samatha on a Tibetan meditation. And, you know what - to complete that, the latest is I found teachings on Vipassana on the same Tibetan meditation. So it is now complete. I feel so blessed that I have all these reference and guidance material all of a sudden. They were there all the time, but as the saying goes - "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". I attribute this to the blessings from the completion of the Sanghata Sutra. It really gives the person a surge of merits.
